I was a smoker for 38 years. One day, Jan 1st, 2005, I decided to smoke my last cigarette and throw the remainder of the pack away. Why did I quit? Besides the smell, the smoke, the clothes that smelled like an ash tray, the yellowish fingers/teeth, and the heavy breathing walking up stairs, it was getting to be too expensive. The real reason I quit was that I finally woke up after watching my wife's father suffering from Pulminory Fibrosis, and my mother suffering with asthma. I decided at that time to get in shape, and the first thing I was going to do was to quit smoking. Yes, and I did. How did I do it - COLD TURKEY. It worked. I never ever wanted another cigarette after that day, never smoked again, and never will. It is one disgusting habit that I can live without. My new habit - hiking, running, and staying in the best shape that I've ever been in. I owe much of my success in getting in shape to my wife (Lauren), The American Lung Association and to the issues that I have experienced in my life. |
